LESSON 5 OF 8 · ABOUT 10 MINUTES

Undo a miscount safely

Find the last correct square and reverse the stitch path without cutting cloth.

Bring to the table

  • Your chart
  • A blunt needle
  • Good light

See the example

A leaf should occupy columns 2, 3 and 4, but you stitched columns 3, 4 and 5. Do not move the next row to match the mistake. Establish the last correct cross, then remove only the misplaced run.

Chart: columns 2–4CorrectYour cloth: columns 3–5Undo fromthe last legCheck against two nearby known positions
The top row has crosses in columns 2–4. The lower row is shifted one column right. The recovery arrow follows the most recent stitches backward.

Try it step by step

  1. Stop and verify the mismatch

Compare the row and column numbers with two known stitches. Check that you have not switched to an overlapping part of a printed chart.

  2. Release the working thread

If the wrong run is still on your needle, unthread it. Use the blunt needle to lift the most recent diagonal gently and pull its thread back through the hole.

  3. Reverse the path

Remove the top diagonal before its lower diagonal, following the sewing path backward. For a finished run, first loosen its tucked tail; avoid snipping near the fabric.

  4. Reset the chart and restart

Unmark the removed cells in stitch mode or erase your pencil marks. Lay the cloth flat and check for damaged threads; replace frayed floss before restitching at the verified position.

YOUR TURN

A small practice check

The last three crosses are one column too far right. Your needle is still attached. What is the next useful action?

Choose one action

Show the answer and explanation

Verify the position, unthread the needle and reverse the newest diagonal

Confirm the error, then undo in reverse order with the thread released from the needle. Cutting near the front can damage an Aida block and a shifted design hides the counting error.

Check your actual work

  • Two reference points agree with the corrected row.
  • My progress marks match the stitches still on the cloth.
  • No fabric block has been cut or split.

The practice check reviews a method. Use these checks on your own cloth before moving on.

If something goes wrong

The thread will not pull backward.

Look for a later stitch crossing or trapping that thread on the back. Release it in reverse order; do not force it through.

The Aida is damaged.

Pause before restitching. Assess the small area on scrap or use a fresh piece if the holes no longer support an even cross.
