Understand your thread estimate

A practical starting point, with the assumptions visible.

Count each color separately

Every filled square is counted from the actual grid. A full cross has two front diagonals. Our estimate adds two square lengths for the back, plus a start and end allowance for each short run. Blank squares consume no stitches.

Allow for tails and reserve

Base single-strand length is stitches × (2√2 + 2) × (25.4 ÷ fabric count) millimeters. Add 80 mm of tails for every 400 mm run, multiply by two or three strands, then add the selected 10–50% reserve. This is a model, not a measured guarantee.

A meter of strands is not a meter of skein

A six-strand 8-meter skein contains 48 meters of single strands. A 3-meter single-strand estimate is 0.0625 skeins, but you still need at least one skein of that color if it is not in your stash. Different colors cannot be combined into one purchase.

What changes actual usage

Tension, thread travel, starting method, extra tails and mistakes all change use. Intentional separated stitches need extra care. End and restart across gaps longer than five squares. You can increase the reserve to 30% or 50%; the PDF will reflect the same settings.

For fabric basics, see DMC’s fabric guide. Our material assumptions are documented here; no exact brand-color match or physical test is claimed.
