LESSON 6 OF 8 · ABOUT 8 MINUTES
Finish a thread neatly
Weave a tail under stitch backs, check it, then trim it clear of the fabric.
Bring to the table
- A practice row with at least four crosses
- Blunt tapestry needle
- Small embroidery scissors
See the example
Turn your four-cross practice row over. The bars on the back make a path for the tail. Pass the needle under several bars without piercing the Aida or pulling the front stitches out of shape.
Try it step by step
Leave room to finish
Stop the stitching run while enough thread remains to guide the needle under the nearby stitch backs. Avoid stitching until only a tiny tail is left.
Weave under the backs
Pass the needle under several nearby bars, preferably in the same color area. Keep the needle behind the fabric so the tail does not appear on the front.
Check and trim
Gently check that the tail is held, then trim the loose end while keeping the scissor tips clear of the cloth and neighboring stitches. Check the front stays flat.
YOUR TURN
A small practice check
Choose the finishing actions in their working order.
Your order:
Show the answer and explanation
Turn over and pass under several nearby stitch backs → Gently check the tail is held and the front stays flat → Trim the remaining loose tail clear of the fabric
Secure the tail, check it, then trim. If the tail slips during the check, you still have enough thread to secure it again.
Check your actual work
- The tail is held under stitch backs.
- No loose end or knot makes a bump on the front.
- The scissor tips stayed clear of the Aida.
The practice check reviews a method. Use these checks on your own cloth before moving on.
If something goes wrong
The remaining tail is too short to thread normally.
Slide the unthreaded needle under the stitch backs first, thread the tail through its eye, then draw it through gently. Undo one or two crosses if more length is needed.
A dark tail shows through a light area.
Withdraw the tail before trimming and tuck it under a nearby dark stitched area instead of carrying it across bare fabric.
