LESSON 8 OF 8 · ABOUT 15 MINUTES
Care for the stitching and choose a finish
Check materials before cleaning, protect the stitches and preserve the finishing allowance.
Bring to the table
- Care labels for fabric, thread and any added materials
- Clean towels if washing is suitable
- The chosen finishing guide
See the example
A cotton design may be washable while its card mount or glued trim is not. Decide on cleaning before adding backing or hardware. Match the finished use to a bookmark, window card, ornament or hoop guide, each with its own trim allowance.
Try it step by step
Check before cleaning
Read the care instructions for every fabric, thread and embellishment. Test a spare stitched sample if colorfastness is uncertain. If a material cannot be washed or is unknown, choose a suitable dry care method or seek its maker’s advice.
Wash only compatible materials
For washable cross stitch, follow the material instructions. Use gentle hand washing and rinse carefully; stop if color runs. Avoid wringing. Roll between clean towels and allow it to dry flat.
Protect the stitch texture
If pressing is permitted, put the stitching face down on a clean towel and use the lowest suitable heat for the materials. Check the effect on a spare sample first.
Keep allowance until fitting
Dry-fit the project against the chosen finish before trimming. Follow that guide’s trim and fold lines, then add backing, mount or hanging loop. Inspect edges and attachments before use.
YOUR TURN
A small practice check
Your stitched cotton is ready for a window card. The adhesive and card cannot be washed. Which order makes sense?
Show the answer and explanation
Check the fabric and thread care, clean and dry if suitable, then dry-fit and mount
Complete suitable cleaning before adding a non-washable mount. Leave enough fabric for the selected guide, dry-fit it, then trim and attach the backing.
Check your actual work
- I checked all materials, not just the thread.
- The work is dry before it is enclosed or mounted.
- The finish holds without pulling the stitched area out of shape.
The practice check reviews a method. Use these checks on your own cloth before moving on.
If something goes wrong
Color appears in the rinse water.
Stop washing and follow the thread or fabric maker’s care advice. Avoid heat-setting a stain while deciding how to proceed.
The design shifts while fitting the backing.
Remove the temporary hold and recenter before permanently fixing the edges. Preserve the working margin until the fit is settled.
